Yes, Whatsapp needs an active internet connection to work. Wi-fi or any other mobile internet connection will work.

you said that whats app works on wifi, but when I am in the airport whats app do not work, it keeps telling is conecting but never does, also do not connect when i am in a hospital using wifi or sometimes in the mall… I thought it will work on all wifi…. why is this happening?

If your waiting on some one to get bk and you ring them through Whatsapp they have a ringing tone but don’t answer is that cause there isn’t any connection they can’t connect but could they see you ringing.
